Alcatraz

Alcatraz Island, San Francisco

“Chilling, beautiful, and unexpectedly emotional.”

First Impressions

As the ferry pulled away from the San Francisco pier and Alcatraz came into view, I felt a quiet shift—like I was heading somewhere heavy with history. What used to be one of the most notorious prisons in the world now sits quietly in the bay, wrapped in fog, stories, and seagulls. It’s haunting and beautiful all at once.

Getting There

I took the ferry with Alcatraz City Cruises, which leaves from Pier 33. Booking ahead is a must—tickets often sell out days in advance. The ride over was only 15 minutes, but the views of the Golden Gate Bridge and city skyline? Stunning.

Tip: Opt for the early morning or late afternoon slots—it’s quieter and the light is gorgeous for photos.

My Experience

As soon as I stepped onto the island, it felt like time slowed down. I joined the self-guided audio tour, and it was so well done—it walks you through real prisoner stories, escape attempts, and eerie cellblocks while voices echo in your ears. At one point, I stood in a solitary confinement cell and just… stood there. It was intense.

Beyond the prison, I wandered past wildflowers and crashing waves on the island’s edge. The contrast between the brutal past and the peaceful present was surreal.

Good to Know

  • Open: Daily (exact hours vary), including most holidays

  • Tickets: ~$45 for adults (includes ferry + audio tour)

  • Visit Duration: 2.5–3 hours recommended

  • Facilities: Bathrooms on ferry & island; small gift shop

  • Accessibility: The SEAT tram is available for visitors who don’t want to walk the steep incline to the prison

Snack Break

There’s no food sold on the island, so I grabbed a coffee and croissant from Pier 39 before boarding. You can snack on the ferry, though—and trust me, you’ll want to refuel afterward with a bite at Fisherman’s Wharf (clam chowder in a sourdough bowl, anyone?).

Personal Tips

  • Dress in layers—the wind can go from breezy to bone-chilling fast

  • Wear comfy shoes—the island is hilly and the surfaces uneven

  • Bring headphones if you prefer using the Alcatraz audio tour on your phone

  • Look out for the gardens and unexpected birdlife—there’s quiet beauty in the corners

Why I Loved It

⭐ 4.8/5 — “Alcatraz surprised me. I came for the history but left with a strange mix of awe, reflection, and peace. It’s one of those places that stays with you, long after you’ve left.”

What You’ll Want to Capture

  • Ferry ride views of the skyline and Golden Gate

  • The cracked walls and shadows of the old cellhouse

  • Your silhouette against the prison bars (very moody, very cool)

  • Wildflowers or fog rolling in over the island cliffs
