Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière
Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, Lyon
“A hilltop sanctuary where silence, sky, and stone come together in breathtaking harmony.”
First Impressions
Perched high above Lyon, the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is the kind of place that leaves you speechless. I saw its white silhouette from down in the city—and from that moment, I had to go. Once I reached the top, the view alone made the journey worth it. But stepping inside? That was a whole other kind of wonder—gilded ceilings, mosaics that shimmer like stars, and a sacred stillness that holds you gently in place.
Getting There
I took the funicular from Vieux Lyon (Fourvière station)—a charming, quick ride up the hill. You can also walk if you’re up for a steep but scenic climb (wear good shoes!). Either way, when you step out and see the view over all of Lyon, it’s unforgettable.
Tip: Go around sunrise or just before sunset for softer light, peaceful energy, and golden city views.
My Experience
I walked around the outside terrace first, completely captivated by the sweeping views of Lyon’s rooftops, rivers, and rolling hills beyond. Then I entered the basilica—and just stood still. The walls glittered with blue and gold mosaics, angels adorned the arches, and soft light filtered through stained glass windows in hues that felt like they belonged to heaven.
There’s also a crypt below the main church, quieter and more intimate, where I lit a candle and just… paused.
