Notre-Dame de la Garde
Notre-Dame de la Garde, Marseille
“A place where earth, sky, and sea come together—and your soul quietly soars.”
First Impressions
Perched high above the city like a watchful protector, Notre-Dame de la Garde is more than just a church—it’s the heart of Marseille. Locals call her “La Bonne Mère” (the Good Mother), and once you’re standing there with the wind in your hair and the entire city spread out below you, you’ll understand why. She’s graceful, powerful, and filled with reverence—and she sees everything.
Getting There
I took the Petit Train Touristique from the Old Port, which winds through Marseille’s streets before climbing the hill—such a fun and scenic way to arrive! You can also take bus 60 or hike up if you’re feeling adventurous (be ready for a steep but stunning walk).
Tip: Visit in late afternoon for golden light and fewer crowds—or early morning for a peaceful start with soft sea breezes.
My Experience
When I reached the top, I just stood for a moment, completely spellbound. The 360° views of Marseille, the Vieux-Port, and the Mediterranean Sea are nothing short of breathtaking. But inside the basilica was where I truly felt moved—ornate mosaics, shimmering gold ceilings, and hanging model boats offered in thanks by sailors. It was spiritual, even if you’re not religious.
I lit a candle, sat quietly in a side chapel, and felt the kind of calm you only find in places touched by centuries of hope.

Snack Break
After exploring, I grabbed a lemonade from a nearby kiosk and sat on the terrace outside the church. The view over Marseille’s rooftops and islands was cinematic. For something more filling, there are cafés back at the base of the hill or near the Old Port.
