Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
“It was pure joy—soft koalas, smiling kangaroos, and that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you connect with something wild and wonderful.”
First Impressions
Stepping into Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary felt like walking into Australia’s softer side. Nestled among gum trees along the Brisbane River, it’s peaceful, open-air, and filled with the sounds of birdsong and gentle movement. I could hear kids laughing, kookaburras calling, and the rustle of eucalyptus leaves—soothing and completely heartwarming.
Getting There
I took the Miramar River Cruise from South Bank—it’s a beautiful 75-minute ride straight to the sanctuary (highly recommend if you want the scenic route!). You can also drive or take a bus from Brisbane CBD (Route 430 or 445).
Tip: Arrive early in the morning for koala cuddles before the line builds up, and when the animals are most active.
My Experience
I started at the koala enclosures—yes, there are dozens of them, just lounging in trees and blinking sleepily. Then came the big moment: I held a koala. She was soft, warm, and smelled faintly like eucalyptus. The keeper took photos, but the memory is what stayed with me.
I wandered through the free-roaming kangaroo reserve, where I hand-fed a kangaroo who gently nibbled from my palm. I also met wombats, echidnas, and a sleepy platypus who finally swam past after I waited patiently.
Later, I caught a raptor show and a sheepdog demo—authentic, engaging, and full of Aussie charm.
