Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria
Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Melbourne
“It was the kind of place that makes you breathe deeper, walk slower, and smile for no reason at all.”
First Impressions
As soon as I stepped into the Royal Botanic Gardens, it felt like the city just melted away. Just minutes from Melbourne’s bustling streets, I found myself wandering under shady trees, past mirror-still lakes and vibrant blooms. The air smelled like eucalyptus and sunlight. Birds chirped softly overhead.
It was calm, lush, and everything I didn’t know I needed that day.
Getting There
I walked from Flinders Street Station—about 15 minutes along the scenic Yarra River and past the Arts Precinct. You can also take a tram down St Kilda Road and hop off near the Shrine of Remembrance.
Tip: Bring a picnic or a book. This is the kind of place where time slows beautifully.
My Experience
I wandered without a plan, and it was perfect. I stumbled upon the Fern Gully, where mist hovered and leaves whispered in the breeze. I found a bench near the lake, where black swans floated by and a couple read quietly nearby. There were families picnicking, friends laughing over iced coffees, and solo walkers like me just taking it all in.
I joined a free Aboriginal Heritage Walk and learned about the land’s deep cultural history—it gave everything around me even more meaning.
Later, I visited the Arid Garden, with its striking cacti and sculptural succulents. So unexpected, yet so peaceful.
