Musée des Confluences, Lyon

Part science, part storybook, part spaceship—this museum made me feel curious in every direction.

First Impressions

Rising like a futuristic crystal at the southern tip of Lyon, the Musée des Confluences is impossible to ignore. Its bold, angular design made me pause before even going inside—was I entering a museum or a spacecraft? And the name? It fits perfectly. This place isn’t just about exhibits—it’s about where things meet: science and soul, past and future, humanity and nature.

Getting There

The museum sits at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers—hence the name! I arrived by Tram T1 (Musée des Confluences stop), but you can also take a scenic riverside walk or bike ride from the city center.

Tip: Go in the morning if you want to linger without crowds, or late afternoon for that golden light reflecting off the building’s metallic curves.

My Experience

Inside, I was greeted by soaring glass ceilings and open space—then guided into immersive, beautifully curated exhibits. Each room told a different kind of story: dinosaurs and meteorites, mummies and myths, futuristic tech, and rituals across civilizations. Every object felt like a piece of a puzzle, and the museum wove them into a narrative that felt personal and universal all at once.

I especially loved the sections about human cultures—costumes, tools, traditions from all over the world, displayed with so much care and depth.

Good to Know

Snack Break

I stopped at the museum’s café with river views and ordered a light lunch—quiche and a sparkling lemonade. It was calm, modern, and the perfect place to reflect on everything I’d just seen. If you sit outside, you’ll catch a soft breeze off the water and views of both rivers meeting just below.
