American Village
American Village, Okinawa
“Like a beachy daydream meets a pastel postcard—fun, chill, and just the right amount of quirky.”
First Impressions
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but American Village turned out to be this cheerful, eclectic mash-up of West Coast vibes, Japanese hospitality, and Okinawan sunshine. Colorful buildings, palm trees, murals, music, and the ocean just steps away—every corner invited a photo, a smile, or a snack.
It’s not a cultural deep-dive—it’s a feel-good coastal escape that doesn’t take itself too seriously. And honestly? I loved that.
Getting There
I came by rental car—super convenient in Okinawa—but you can also take a bus from Naha (about 45–60 mins). Located in Chatan, American Village is well-marked and easy to spot—just look for the Ferris wheel!
Tip: Late afternoon into evening is the best time to go. Watch the sunset at the beach, then enjoy the village all lit up at night.
My Experience
I strolled through the colorful alleys of Depot Island, browsed boutiques filled with local crafts, beachwear, and vintage Americana, then grabbed a cold drink and walked over to Sunset Beach just in time for magic hour.
Later, I rode the Ferris wheel for sweeping ocean views, tried the Okinawan taco rice (a local classic), and ended the evening with a mango smoothie under string lights and stars. It felt like summer bottled up in one breezy evening.
